Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of COVID-19 research and the need for corporate confidentiality. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; the arguments are presented in a fairly basic manner and could benefit from more detailed explanation or nuanced examples. The position is consistent throughout the essay, which helps in meeting the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However', 'Therefore', and 'For example', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by grammatical errors. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints, which assists the reader in following the structure of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. There are several spelling errors (e.g., 'KNOWLEAGE', 'SICENTIST', 'SIGNIFICAT', 'COMAPNIES', 'SENSETIVE', 'SECRETE') and some awkward word choices, such as 'decent' instead of 'beneficial' or 'appropriate'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'collaboration', 'confidential', and 'duplication', the overall range is limited. These errors do not generally impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'other believe'), missing articles, and incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'people do not waste of time'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization, as the entire text is written in uppercase. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of errors is high enough to be noticeable and occasionally distracts from the content.
