IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

There is an ongoing debate surrounding the boundaries of sharing information with businesses or research organisations. Some argue that it is beneficial to share as much data as possible whereas others show privacy concerns. This essay will discuss both views before stating my opinion.

Scientific research such as those concerning the public welfare require huge amounts of data. The more data the organisations have, the more accurate the results are. For example, medical research, such as on the topic of the symptoms experienced by people suffering from COVID-19, requires large and diverse amount of data. This means that the more data is collected, more uncommon symptoms are detected which could further help save many lives. Moreover, businesses require information about people's preferences, their needs and their complaints. When people share more information, businesses are able to identify what products are more in demand and the improvements that need to be made. This can enhance consumer experience and help businesses make large profits. Many people also share studying materials such as coursebooks or slides online which can help other students across the globe.

However, many people have security and privacy concerns in this digital age. Businesses, governments or organisations frequently gather people's browsing habits, personal credentials or their location which can feel like an invasion of privacy. Furthermore, sharing valuable information such as signatures or national identity numbers can lead to serious issues such as identity theft. Information such as bank card numbers should also never be made public unless provided to a verified authority. If someone untrusted gains access to such information, they can use it to access your bank accounts and execute unauthorized transactions. In today's world, the misuse of generative AI has lead people to be extremely careful when sharing their information. Once an individual's picture is made available to an AI system, it can create issues such as deepfake abuse.

Conclusively, while many argue that a large amount of information is extremely helpful for breakthroughs in scientific research or to assist businesses in analyzing consumer preferences, I firmly hold the view that information that can be easily exploited or misused should not be shared freely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the benefits of information sharing and the risks associated with privacy and security. You clearly state your position in the introduction and reiterate it in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as medical research for the benefits and identity theft/deepfakes for the risks. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is more balanced; the section on the benefits of sharing is slightly more descriptive, while the risks section could benefit from a more nuanced discussion on the 'value' of information mentioned in the prompt, rather than focusing primarily on security threats.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Furthermore' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further to avoid a slightly mechanical feel, and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'such information') consistently points back to the specific noun phrases mentioned earlier to maintain tighter cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'ongoing debate', 'public welfare', 'unauthorized transactions', and 'generative AI' are used appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'studying materials' (should be 'study materials') and 'lead people' (should be 'led people'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items would elevate the score. For example, instead of 'huge amounts of data', you could use 'vast datasets' or 'extensive information repositories'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several instances of grammatical slips, such as 'Scientific research such as those concerning...' (should be 'that concerns') and 'large and diverse amount of data' (should be 'large and diverse amounts of data'). Additionally, 'has lead' is a spelling error for 'has led'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that complex structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, are punctuated and constructed with greater accuracy.
