IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

People hold different opinions about whether it is good to provide information with scientific, research, business and the academic world. Some believe that unrestricted access benefits society, whereas others argue that valuable information should remain confidential. In this essay, I will discuss both views and share my opinion.

To commence with, free access to valuable information enhances educational opportunities and awareness. When people can freely access valuable information, they are able to learn about new discoveries, technologies, and research findings. This enables them to improve their skills, make informed decisions, and contribute to society more effectively. To exemplify this, During COVID - pandemic, many scientists openly share their research, allowing other scientists across the world to develop vaccines and treatment in shorter period of time. Therefore, making valuable information freely available benefits both individuals and society by promoting knowledge and accelerating innovation.

In contrast, the leakage of confidential knowledge have impact on our society. certain data related to business strategies, medical records or scientific research related to national security, should remain confidential because unauthorized access can lead to financial losses, privacy violations, or security threats. For example, if a pharmaceutical company’s confidential vaccine formula is leaked before it is patented, competitors may copy the research, causing substantial financial losses and discouraging future investment in innovation. Therefore, keeping sensitive information confidential is essential to protect businesses, individuals, and national interests.

To conclude, although sharing scientific, academic, and business information helps people gain knowledge and broaden their horizons, some information should remain confidential. Leaking information related to national security, forensic research, or business secrets can seriously harm society and the country. Therefore, valuable information should be shared only when it benefits the public without putting national or business interests at risk.

To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure articles are used correctly with abstract nouns.
