IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Sharing information with people for their benefits is very crucial in scientific research, business and the academic world. Somehow people took wrong advantage of it, like they steal the important ideas related to research make publications on their own name rather the actual person who did the insilico work make plans and implicate in practical work. In these cases keeping information confidential is very crucial for the owner or researcher. It is against the ethics of committee rules to share the information before its publication on google scholar or its relevent websites. Its the work of great hour and dignity to make it confidential.

However, the patent rules in which the one gives the permission to share their own knowledge with other people or collaborators .

My research work was on the topic of making a gene construct from Pyroccus abyssi for bioremediation in which the removal of waste is done through biological ways. I kept it secret.

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. There are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'implicate in practical work' (likely meaning 'implement') and 'work of great hour' (which is non-standard). The candidate struggles to use academic terminology effectively. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of range and the presence of errors in collocation and word formation limit the score. Expanding the vocabulary to include more precise academic terms related to research and intellectual property would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('people took wrong advantage'), article usage ('on the actual person'), and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, which hinders readability. There is a limited range of complex structures, and the attempts at them are often inaccurate. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. The candidate needs to focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading to eliminate these persistent errors.
