IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many individuals think that knowledge can be shared only according to their requirements in scientific research, the education sector, and businesses. However, others argue that information is beneficial and can be transferred to others free of cost. From my perspective, information related to academic, business, and scientific research can be shared with those people who are interested in doing something innovative in these fields, but proper checks and balances are also necessary.

One hand suggested information should be kept in secret because it causes jealousy from competitors. They will create trouble in the education sector instead of making progress. Sensitive information is misused and will breach personal privacy. That's why data should be kept private, especially in military and innovative discoveries.

On the other hand, a few individuals argue that knowledge should be transferred to the next generation with no cost. It can play a significant role in academic development and new discoveries in technology. Those students who prefer to do group studies are taking more interest. They shared their ideas and thoughts and critically analyzed the topic in detail. According to their point of view, information could play a substantial role in society's growth in various sectors.

In my point of view, mutual sharing of knowledge between students of schools, colleges, and universities indulges them in their studies and strengthens their concepts. In addition, international collaboration with businessmen of the world and sharing your company's products with them will boost their selling items. This will definitely boost a government economy as well as the financial stability of a particular company. In contrast, there should be proper check and balances and confidentiality should be private.

In conclusion, information can be shared only at their requirement. Secret information, especially related to the state's project, should be kept private. However knowledge that can helpful for the growth of society and could beneficial for mankind, leading to innovative discoveries, should be transferred to sebsequent generation

For example, the transition from the second paragraph's focus on 'military' to the third paragraph's focus on 'students' lacks a smooth thematic bridge. Referencing is generally clear, but the use of pronouns like 'their' in the final paragraph is ambiguous, as it is unclear whether it refers to the information or the people involved.

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'confidentiality', 'innovative discoveries', and 'financial stability'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor collocation errors, such as 'indulges them in their studies' (which is not the standard usage) and 'transfer to the next generation with no cost' (which could be more naturally phrased as 'free of charge'). Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on repetitive structures.
