Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of COVID-19 research and corporate trade secrets. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about dangerous technology is introduced but not fully explained. The conclusion is also slightly incomplete, as the final sentence cuts off abruptly. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully expanded with clear, logical consequences and that the conclusion is a complete, well-rounded summary of the arguments presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow. For example, the transition between the discussion of scientific research and business could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the abrupt ending in the conclusion negatively impacts the overall coherence of the final section.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'trade secrets', 'unfair competition', and 'innovation'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'were research about' instead of 'were researching' and 'create better solution' instead of 'solutions'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure consistent word forms when discussing complex concepts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and articles. Examples include 'Other think' (should be 'Others think'), 'should not to be shared' (should be 'should not be shared'), and 'improves peoples lives' (should be 'improve people's lives'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing apostrophes and spacing issues (e.g., 'COVID- 19'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of error-free complex structures will help improve this score.
