Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today’s technology and digital era,it would not be so hard to seek out information. For instance, it usually took a lot of time to find out the symptoms of common diseases in the past, but now you can easily search for them within a few seconds. Some believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business or the academic world. Others, however, believe that some knowledge is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. We will discuss both views in the essay.

Many people think that sharing information helps both students and researchers to boost their progress in knowledge or innovative ideas. At some point, this could bring a cure for a dangerous disease , and researchers could speed up their investigation process. Moreover, these data would improve students' intelligence in a variety of subjects such as Math, Physics or Biology.

Nevertheless, sharing research is not always the priority. For example, the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union showed the world their extraordinary technological advancement. It not only makes them slow down , but it also helps them to accelerate their technology and reach space – The first step of humans on the moon.

Furthermore, some private material can not be leaked out , otherwise individuals or companies could be harmful. Personal data like ID or bank card should be well-protected to keep organisations, people safe. If the material gets into the wrong hands, it can lead to serious problems

To conclude, some data can be wide open, while others need to be protected. The best option is to share general findings and keep the personal information. This can both keep important material safe and contribute to the world’s development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding the Cold War is slightly confusing; it is unclear how the competition between the US and the Soviet Union supports the argument that sharing is not always a priority, as the paragraph lacks a clear link between the historical context and the concept of information control. The points regarding personal data are more relevant but could be expanded with more depth. To reach a higher band, ensure that every example directly supports the topic sentence and provides a more thorough explanation of the underlying logic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Nevertheless', and 'Furthermore' are used to transition between ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the jump from the Cold War example to the conclusion is abrupt. Additionally, there are some minor punctuation issues, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'era,it', 'priority. For'), which slightly affects the overall presentation. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent spacing would enhance the coherence of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for the task and allows the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'technological advancement', 'investigation process', and 'general findings'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'wide open' to describe data or 'could be harmful' when referring to the potential for data misuse. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'it would not be so hard to seek out' (which is slightly informal), and 'it not only makes them slow down, but it also helps them' (tense inconsistency). There are also minor errors in article usage and sentence construction, such as 'The first step of humans on the moon' being a sentence fragment. The student shows a good grasp of basic grammar, but more consistent control over complex structures and error-free sentences is needed to reach the next band level.
