Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is an undeniable fact that the knowledge increases as more and more information is shared or discussed. According to my perspective sharing information in scientific research, business and academic world can be useful to a large extend. We know every coin has two sides there are few drawbacks of this also. In the below paragraph I would like to put forth my views with valid opinion in the conclusion.

Firstly, sharing information in scientific research field motivates other individuals. In addition to that, different perspective can be given to that research. For instance, a review paper is publish by sharing that paper in general other people can access it. Now research gap of that paper can be identified by other researchers. Moreover due to that research work mistake can be indentified. In business and the academic world also sharing information plays a vital role. Furthermore, it encourages collaboration among researchers, businesses and educational institutions, resulting in faster innovation and better solutions to real-world problems. Therefore, sharing information should be promoted as it benefits society as a whole.

However, we seldom give a thought to ponder over the other side of the argument. Some information is too valuable or sensitive to be shared freely. For instance, confidential business strategies, military technologies and personal data could be misused if made public. Moreover, companies invest significant time and money in research, so protecting intellectual property is essential to maintain a competitive advantage.

The debate may continue; however, I firmly believe that information should generally be shared for the benefit of society, provided that sensitive, confidential and security-related information is protected. This balanced approach promotes innovation while safeguarding important interests.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both sides of the information-sharing debate and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, particularly in the body paragraphs where you contrast the benefits of collaboration with the necessity of protecting intellectual property. However, the introduction is slightly formulaic and could be more engaging. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are fully integrated into the argument rather than just listed. For instance, the point about 'research gaps' is a strong observation that could be expanded further to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the academic process.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints and the conclusion. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that', 'Moreover', and 'However' to link your thoughts. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the placement of your cohesive devices and ensure that the relationship between sentences is always clear. For example, the transition between the benefits of sharing and the risks of sensitive information is handled well, providing a clear shift in perspective.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'competitive advantage', 'intellectual property', and 'real-world problems' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'knowledge increases' (better as 'knowledge expands') and 'a review paper is publish' (should be 'published'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, some of the phrasing remains somewhat basic. Focusing on more precise academic collocations will help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate good control over basic grammar, and your meaning is always clear. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'a review paper is publish' (passive voice error) and 'mistake can be indentified' (should be 'mistakes can be identified'). Additionally, some sentences could be more complex to show greater flexibility. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice constructions in an academic context. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which supports a solid band 6.5 or 7.0.
