IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are different point of views of people regarding to either information should be shared deliberately or should be kept hidden that is too important and sensitive. However, both perspectives are correct in their own way according to the sort of information and the provider who contains the information.

Firstly, Information comes from discoveries. For the most part, It is necessary to share the discovered information freely because further discoveries would be based on this already known information and there is no benefit to keep them hidden. For instance, knowledge about DNA, organs, metabolism is far important to share. By giving this data freely to public, help doctors not only know about the structure, function of the human internal organs but also tells them how to discover drugs and treat the various diseases. Like wise, passing the knowledge about marketing, business to public may lead to the development of advancing society. Though sharing information may reward the provider with Nobel prizes and popularity.

Turning to the other side of argument, some information is quite confidential and critical to be announced or shared publicly. Sometimes, giving excess of data to everyone can be detrimental. For instance, the knowledge about production of nuclear weapons is confidential. This is too important to share on public platforms because it can create violence and can be used against provider. Moreover, there are bundle of research articles that do not have public access because they consider too valuable to share, for getting this information we need to take a permission from author.

In my opinion, announcing knowledge publicly depends on the type, credibility and sensitivity of information. I strongly believe only that information is shared that is associated with the development of world, through which new discoveries can be made.

All things considered, information based on public interests and benefit is shared and that which may cause violation should be kept hidden.

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'detrimental' and 'confidential'. Some phrasing is repetitive, and the vocabulary lacks the sophistication required for a higher band. Improving the precision of word choice would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the knowledge about production of nuclear weapons'), prepositions ('regarding to'), and subject-verb agreement ('there are bundle of research articles'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward sentence constructions that hinder the flow. The writer demonstrates an ability to form complex sentences, but the frequency of errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on article usage and consistent verb forms would be beneficial.
