IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many individuals suggest that only required knowledge can be shared between different sectors, such as business, the education sector, and scientific research. However, some people think that information should be transferred to others freely without any hesitation. In my point of view, useful data can be accessible for everyone without any cost, but secret information should not be publicly available.
On the one hand, people consider that providing information can play a crucial role in business growth and advancement in the research and education sectors. A lot of students had faced problems in their studies. They need proper guidance and essential information about a particular field and subject. By giving useful detail, children have developed a strong interest in their subjects. Businessmen can create job opportunities for many young people because unemployment is a major issue facing developing countries. If businessmen shared techniques and experience with young people, they could start small-scale businesses. As a result, unemployment can be minimized, and people will be financially stable and meet their expenses. Furthermore, technology is getting more advanced every day; without scientific research and new innovation, countries cannot compete globally. So, growth of economy and technological innovation are only possible by investing in research. This could be only possible if the scientific community honestly share their knowledge to the next generation.
On the other hand, some people argue that information should not be publicly available because some data is too private. For example, military-related and medical testing-related details are too important. So, this data should be confidential. In my opinion secret information should have proper checks and balances and not be accessible for everyone.
In conclusion, knowledge should be shared freely because it is essential in technological advancement, for employment, and for universities and college students. But at the same time I believe confidential information such as military and diagnostic-related details should not be publicly available because it could be harmful for the public.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of unemployment and technological advancement. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the link between businessmen sharing techniques and the reduction of unemployment is a bit simplistic and could have been more thoroughly explained. The position is consistent throughout, but the depth of analysis remains at a general level rather than exploring the nuances of intellectual property or the ethics of open-source research.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the transition from discussing students to businessmen in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the use of cohesive devices lacks the flexibility required for a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'technological innovation', 'confidential', and 'diagnostic-related'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is some repetition of basic words like 'information' and 'data'. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'honestly share their knowledge' instead of 'transparently share' or 'freely disseminate'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and sophistication needed for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using conditional sentences, such as 'If businessmen shared techniques... they could start small-scale businesses.' However, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'This could be only possible' (word order) and 'growth of economy' (missing article). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are minor issues with sentence construction. The majority of the sentences are clear, and errors do not impede communication, but the control over complex structures is not consistent enough for a higher band.
