Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding semiconductor chips is a bit disjointed and lacks a clear connection to the broader debate about information sharing. While the prompt is addressed, the supporting points in the second paragraph are repetitive and lack depth, focusing more on personal gain rather than the broader societal implications of open research. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced examples and ensure that your arguments are fully extended and logically linked to the prompt's core themes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'For instance' and 'In conclusion', to link your thoughts. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'While considering probable consequences of people's who argue that...'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The use of cohesive devices is sufficient to guide the reader, but it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'confidential', 'innovation', and 'semiconductor chips'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'numerous information' (should be 'a great deal of information') and 'better stand in their life'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and you rely on basic phrasing in several places. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'Some individuals contemplate that is is better' (typo/syntax), 'There are many people believe' (missing relative pronoun), and 'people's who argue' (incorrect pluralization). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors throughout. The frequency of these errors indicates that you have not yet achieved the level of control required for a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
