IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some people believe that information should be shared as much as possible in scientific research, business and education, while others think that some information is too valuable to be shared freely. This essay will discuss both views and explain why i believe that information should generally be shared, but some important information should be protected.
On the one hand, sharing information can have many benefits for society. In scientific research, for example, scientists can work together and develop new medicines and technologies more quickly when they have access to each other's research. Similarly, in the academic world, students and teachers can learn from different sources and improve their knowledge. In business, sharing some information between companies and employees can also help to create better products and services. Therefore, the free exchange of information can encourage cooperation and progress.
On the other hand, there are some types of information that should not be shared freely. In business, companies may have confidential information about new products, business plans or customers. If this information is given to competitors, a company could suffer financial losses. Scientific research can also contain valuable discoveries that require a large amount of money and time to develop. If these discoveries are copied without permission, researchers or companies may not receive a fair reward for their work. In addition, some personal and sensitive information should always be kept private.
In my opinion, sharing information is important because it supports cooperation, education and development. However, this does not mean that every piece of information should be available to everyone. Confidential business information, personal data and valuable research should be protected until it is safe and appropriate to share them.
In conclusion, although sharing information can bring significant benefits to science, business and education, some information is too sensitive or valuable to be freely available. I therefore, believe that information should be shared when possible, but reasonable limits are necessary.
