IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Information is considered as the currency of modern times. Data centres and cloud computing practices thrive and pay for the information to train their models for a better approach toward the numerous fields of life. Companies like Google, Microsoft and Amazon appreciate the more and more of information to be incorporated in their servers.

Questions may arise about the concerns or opinions of the people around it. The most discussed question is whether to share the information freely or should be paid for giving it? It is suggested by some people that sharing information about scientific research, business and academic world must be free of cost. They might be taking it as a moral responsibility of humans to help other by the useful pieces of information. This notion possibly came from the prior experience regarding harder ways to get information about so many necessary things.

There is another class of people, which feels that it is necessary to keep some important and valuable information sacred for many reasons. The most crucial part of information should be charged to have. This is another side of picture. It is evident that misuse of information mostly happens because there always lies an evil in a human itself. International organizations have officially banned the exchange of information regarding nuclear fusion or fision due to its serious threats to the humanity. Scientists like Abdul Qadeer Khan, a nuclear scientist of Pakistan, faced the allegations of sharing the prohibited information to Iran. It is a very relevant example to the secondary thought mentioned above.

Costing the special pieces of information is another idea, but it is only realated to create a sense of responsibility around the most valuable piece of information. I believe, it is a very good thing to do. Because we sometimes do not value the information when it is free. Paying to get the information make us more careful about its further usage. Scientific research, unless it directly deals with the life of humanity or any other living organisms could be free, otherwise must be charged because it required a lot efforts and money to do research and take conclusions through it.

A very relevant example about business information is the formula of Cocacola. The have built billions of dollars of business on that formula creating a lot secure job all around the world. That formula is an information and must not be shared freely.

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However,' 'It is evident that,' and 'For example,' though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between the opening paragraph about cloud computing and the main topic could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints and the author's own perspective, which helps the reader follow the argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'incorporate,' 'allegations,' and 'prohibited,' which demonstrate a reasonable range. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'costing the special pieces of information' instead of 'placing a cost on' or 'monetizing,' and 'take conclusions' instead of 'draw conclusions.' These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the argument. A more varied and precise vocabulary would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some error-free sentences, there are frequent grammatical slips, such as 'help other by the useful pieces' (should be 'help others with'), 'there always lies an evil in a human itself' (awkward phrasing), and 'it required a lot efforts' (should be 'a lot of effort'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. The errors are noticeable but rarely impede the reader's understanding of the intended meaning. Increased control over complex structures would improve the score.
