IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is an arguement as to whether it is necessarry to publish data to the public be it business, academia or science or to sell the information since it is valueble. The essay will discuss both sides and come up with personal opinion.
On one hand, some individuals believe that sharing all the information is an adavantage in the academic world especially in scientific research. One major advantage is the reduction of future risks. A good example would be the recent tragic covid-19. The publication of research allowed people to understand where the virus came from, the triggers of the virus as well as ways that could assist in ensuaring that the virus will not re-surface. If reseach is not well published and people are not well informed about certain dangers or even cultural practices.
However, other people believe some information is too valueable to be published freely especially business information. In most cases the reseon why some business thrive is because of the power of privacy makes businesses thrive therefore giving information freely will be like destroying the business. Therefore, sharing the information for free could mean destroying the business and personal growth but selling it would mean u growth for all.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that sharing information for free depends with the type of information at stake: if the information could put people's lives at risk like the scientific health related data, then it should be shared freely but if it is for personal growth and making profit then people should pay to get it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the paragraph on business privacy is repetitive and lacks specific examples to support the claim that sharing information destroys businesses. The argument regarding scientific research is better supported by the COVID-19 example, but the sentence structure at the end of that paragraph is incomplete, leaving the thought unfinished. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your reasoning with more depth and ensure all points are fully articulated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'However', and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in the argument. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final sentence of the second paragraph where the thought is left hanging. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that each paragraph has a strong, unified focus would enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'academia', 'scientific research', and 'privacy'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'arguement', 'necessarry', 'valueble', 'adavantage', and 'reseon'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on proofreading your work for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more precise academic collocations to elevate the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'sharing information for free depends with the type of information' (should be 'depends on') and 'u growth for all'. Punctuation is generally functional, but the incomplete sentence at the end of the second paragraph ('If reseach is not well published...') significantly impacts the grammatical accuracy of that section. Increasing your control over prepositions and ensuring all sentences are complete will help improve your score in this criterion.
