Student answer (Band 6.0)

Few individuals are of the firm idea that it is profound to disseminate as much data as available in empirical research, business and educational sector while many are of interest that few ideas are very essential and confidential to be spread easily. In my opinion, these two ideas deserve equally important assessment.

For the information to be shared freely, it will benefit the developing sector more as it will bring opportunities for different companies to work in collaboration and gain more profit. For instance, if one company is working on some scientific innovation it will gain help of business sector to market it valuably. Another valuable asset is scientific progress the free exchange of information bring to the world. For example if a researcher is working on some discovery to solve a particular disease and he shared the idea to the fellow researcher then the work may occur more rapidly and the mere idea can become real. It can collectively help us to gain more benefit rather than keeping it to ourselves.

In some other case, information should not be shared too freely because it raises serious ethical and moral concerns and can directly lead to theft. Just in case, if a business is working hard for a project and has used all its technical aspects for the progress then exchanging the confidential information with the other party will harm its position in the market. A researcher own discovery is its intellectual property and no one has the right to get benefit from it for instance a researcher may patent his discovery so no one can reproduce its work. Some information could be dangerous if everyone has access to it.

In my opinion, both sides has their own pros and cons.Information should be shared for collaboration purposes and at the same time sensitive information should be protected to keep the company integrity. Therefore, information should be shared responsibly not necessarily freely.

To conclude, I would like to say that excess of everything is always bad so there should be a balance in both situations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefits of collaboration in research and the risks of intellectual property theft in business. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the point about 'ethical and moral concerns' is mentioned but not fully explored. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the two views. To reach a higher band, the student should provide more specific, detailed examples rather than relying on generalized scenarios.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'Another valuable asset', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, there is some mechanical use of these devices, and the flow between sentences can occasionally feel repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though some transitions between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother to improve the overall progression of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'disseminate', 'empirical', and 'intellectual property'. However, there are also instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'profound to disseminate' and 'gain help of business sector'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the argument. Expanding the range of collocations and refining the use of academic terminology would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'A researcher own discovery is its intellectual property' (missing possessive 's') and 'both sides has their own pros and cons' (subject-verb agreement). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. While the student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be highly beneficial.
