IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Information is the backbone of effective tasks related to all fields in the world. Some persons advocate sharing all the information for educational as well as business purposes, while others believe that only limited information should be shared, as some data is too important to share freely. I shall discuss both points of view, and I share my own opinion.

According to one group, sharing more information for the cause of scientific research as well as business is so valuable that it creates convenience for others and leads to the invention of new things which are better for humanity. To strengthen their argument, they cite the example of growth in the artificial intelligence sector. As in 2010, only a few had knowledge about AI, but due to sharing information in the academic sector for the academic community’s publication of research papers, the quality of AI in the form of various AI tools improved right now. AI tools not only open doors for researchers in the field but also benefit the common user in doing daily tasks.

In contrast, critics have an argument that sharing of all information is not good, as some information is so critical that some persons may be violating societal norms. To illustrate their point, they provide the example of the creation of the atomic bomb. Till the mid-20th century only a few countries knew about it, but right now more than ten countries now possess nuclear weapons, and it creates an imbalance of power in the world and also a threat for human lives on earth.

After discussing both views, I conclude that while widespread information sharing is beneficial, it is not suitable for all contexts, as only limited information should be restricted, as this is more beneficial

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the growth of AI and the proliferation of nuclear weapons. However, the development of the ideas is somewhat limited; the conclusion is brief and lacks a nuanced summary of the arguments presented. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on the implications of your points, ensuring that the 'why' and 'how' are explored more deeply to provide a more comprehensive discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'To strengthen their argument', and 'To illustrate their point' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the final conclusion and the preceding arguments could be more tightly integrated to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You demonstrate an ability to use topic-specific terms like 'scientific research', 'academic community', and 'societal norms'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing (e.g., 'good to share', 'new things'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a more sophisticated control of language. Some word choices, such as 'effective tasks related to all fields', are slightly imprecise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several minor grammatical errors, such as 'sharing of all information' (should be 'the sharing of all information') and 'it creates an imbalance... and also a threat for human lives' (preposition error: 'to human lives'). There are also some awkward phrasings like 'improved right now'. You have a good grasp of basic grammar, but to achieve a higher band, you need to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and refine your control over punctuation and prepositions.
