IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Information is the backbone of effective tasks related to all fields in the world. Some persons advocate sharing all the information for educational as well as business purposes, while others believe that only limited information should be shared, as some data is too important to share freely. I shall discuss both points of view, and I share my own opinion.

According to proponents, sharing of more information drives scientific commercial innovation, which creates convenience for humanity. To strengthen their argument, they cite the example of growth in the artificial intelligence sector. As in 2010, only a few people had knowledge about AI, but due to shared knowledge, it has since produced advanced tools that benefit both researchers and everyday users. AI's rapid growth stems from open research publications.

In contrast, critics have an argument that sharing of all information is not good, as some information is so critical that some individuals may misuse certain information in ways that threaten society. To illustrate their point, they provide the example of the creation of the atomic bomb. Till the middle of the 20th century only a few countries knew about it, but now more than ten countries possess nuclear weapons. The spread of these weapons has contributed to an imbalance of power and created a serious threat to human life.

After discussing both views, I conclude that while widespread information sharing is beneficial, it is not suitable for all contexts, as only limited information should be restricted, as this is more beneficial.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the growth of AI and the proliferation of nuclear weapons. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and could have been more insightful by summarizing the main points more effectively. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be expanded with more depth or nuance regarding the 'business' aspect mentioned in the prompt, which was largely overlooked in favor of scientific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'To strengthen their argument', and 'To illustrate their point' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. The progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow. While the structure is sound, the transition between the final body paragraph and the conclusion could be smoother to enhance the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'commercial innovation', 'open research publications', and 'imbalance of power'. There is an attempt to use a range of vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'information' and 'sharing'. The word choice is accurate, and there are no significant spelling or collocation errors that impede communication. To improve, the student should aim for more varied synonyms to avoid repetition and incorporate more sophisticated academic collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and the meaning is always clear. There are some minor issues, such as 'sharing of more information' (which would be more natural as 'sharing more information') and the slightly awkward phrasing in the conclusion. However, these errors are infrequent and do not hinder understanding. The punctuation is generally correct. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim to use a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional clauses or passive voice constructions, with greater consistency.
