IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Information is the backbone of effective tasks related to all fields in the world. Some persons advocate sharing all the information for educational as well as business purposes, while others believe that only limited information should be shared, as some data is too important to share freely. Before sharing my own opinion, I shall discuss both points of view.
According to proponents, sharing of more information drives scientific commercial innovation, which creates convenience for humanity. To strengthen their argument, they cite the example of growth in the artificial intelligence sector. In 2010, only a few people had knowledge about AI, but due to shared knowledge, it has since produced advanced tools that benefit both researchers and everyday users. AI's rapid growth stems from open research publications.
In contrast, critics have an argument that sharing of all information is not good, as some information is so critical that some individuals may misuse certain information in ways that threaten society. To illustrate their point, they provide the example of the creation of the atomic bomb. Till the middle of the 20th century only a few countries knew about it, but now nine nations possess nuclear arsenals. The spread of these weapons has contributed to an imbalance of power and created a serious threat to human life.
After discussing both views, I conclude that while widespread information sharing is beneficial, it is not suitable for all contexts, as only limited information should be restricted, which is more beneficial.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the response falls slightly short of the 250-word minimum requirement, which impacts the depth of the discussion. While the points regarding AI and nuclear weapons are relevant, the conclusion is somewhat abrupt and lacks the necessary development to fully support the position taken. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your reasoning in the body paragraphs and ensure the conclusion synthesizes the arguments more effectively. The under-length nature of the response limits the overall development of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'To strengthen their argument', and 'To illustrate their point' are used to guide the reader through the text. However, the transition between the final body paragraph and the conclusion feels a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the overall flow could be improved by using more sophisticated linking phrases to connect the arguments more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proponents', 'commercial innovation', 'imbalance of power', and 'arsenals'. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary is generally appropriate for an academic context. However, the range is somewhat limited, and some phrasing is repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'information'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and collocations to enhance the sophistication of your writing and avoid relying on basic terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. For instance, 'Before sharing my own opinion, I shall discuss both points of view' is a well-constructed complex sentence. However, the range of structures is somewhat restricted; you could benefit from incorporating more varied subordinate clauses or passive constructions to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility. Overall, the control of grammar is solid, and the writing is clear and easy to follow.
