Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

We live in a world where information is key. Be it a scientific research, a business idea or academics, one keeps wanting the latest information on how to keep improving and be better. Some people love to share information that they found to the world, while others feel that the information is too important or too valuable and must not be shared freely. I beleive we must share information about the things we know as it might benefit someone else's life.

Information is a very important aspect in an individual's life. Not everyone can access the same information due to lack of technology or resources. But everyone may need the same information. Many people are not lucky enough to have enough facilities using which they can access various information. Imagine a student who studies really well but can't afford to buy textbooks. He has no means to study. All he can rely on is the notes he noted down in class. He has a classmate who has all the textbooks but he won't give it to him. His classmate is jealous of him so he insists from giving him the textbooks.

This is the reality we live in. People choose not to share beacuse of jealousy, greed, envy, etc. I believe sharing information can solve major crisis across the globe. People struggle with a task just because they don't have the right information. This information is free but still people can't access it and once they do they feel like this information belongs to them. They feel that only they have the right to that information as they found it first. That is the biggest misconception. No one owns information.

Students would have performed well, researchers would have completed their study and businesses would have flourished, only if information was shared. People tend to be blinded by the negative feelings of jealousy and greed. This refrains them from doing what is right for the society and forces them to do what they think is right.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The discussion focuses heavily on the moral aspect of sharing (jealousy and greed) rather than the practical or economic implications of intellectual property in business or scientific research. While the student provides an example of a student and textbooks, this is a narrow interpretation of the prompt's scope. To reach a higher band, the response needs to explore the counter-argument—why some information is deemed too valuable or sensitive to share—with more depth and academic maturity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Imagine a student' and 'This is the reality we live in', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, particularly the reliance on 'This' to start sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the example, and the conclusion. The flow is generally smooth, though the connection between the business/scientific context mentioned in the prompt and the personal example provided could be more explicitly linked to improve overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at more sophisticated vocabulary, such as 'misconception' and 'flourished'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'insists from giving him' (should be 'refuses to give him') and 'major crisis' (should be 'major crises'). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Be it a scientific research' (should be 'Be it scientific research' or 'a piece of scientific research') and 'I beleive' (spelling error). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. While the student attempts complex sentences, they are not always error-free. The punctuation is generally functional, but the control over complex structures needs to be more consistent to achieve a higher score.
