IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some argue that it is very important to share information regarding scientific research, business and the academic world, while others think that information with crucial details and facts should be hidden. This essay will discuss both views and explain why I believe that public has all the rights to know all the information, although some vital information that are valuable should not be revealed.

On one hand, people who think that information regarding researches, business and academic must be shared, believe that public has all the rights to be familiar with the news world wide. The reason behind this is they think people should be aware of everything that is going on in the world. For instance, if scientists are researching about a specific wide spread disease or infection, it is their responsibility to share the findings with the people, so that they can prevent themselves from getting exposed to such diseases.

On the other hand, some people argue that sharing all kinds of information with public might cause problems. The main reason behind this is, they believe that information that are crucial to the nation or any scientific department, is better when not shared. For example, when the blue print of Indian currency got leaked, Pakistan took advantage of it and printed fake money in order to affect India's economy, after which Indian Prime Minister had to pass order to change the design and print new notes. Due to which citizens underwent lot of trouble exchanging notes.

In my opinion, people should be educated about any new researches regarding the disease and the cure for it, and information regarding academic world and businesses, but the information that can cause trouble must be kept in secret to prevent major consequences.

To conclude, although everyone has right to access to information, crucial details that are vulnerable to the nation and businesses are better to be hidden from public.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the example of scientific research on diseases and the specific case of currency security. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; the explanation of why information should be shared is a bit repetitive, and the conclusion is brief. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be extended with more depth or nuance, particularly regarding the business aspect mentioned in the prompt, which was largely overlooked in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there is occasional awkward phrasing, such as 'Due to which citizens underwent lot of trouble', which disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the use of cohesive devices could be more varied and sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'vulnerable' and 'consequences'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'researches' (research is an uncountable noun), 'news world wide', and 'kept in secret' (should be 'kept secret'). These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'information that are crucial' (should be 'is'), 'public has all the rights' (should be 'the public'), and 'researches regarding the disease'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward sentence constructions that affect readability. A wider range of error-free complex structures is needed to move beyond the current band.
