Student answer (Band 6.0)

Numerous individuals believe that it is essential to give plenty of information in scientific research, business and education. In contrast, others are of the view that some information is too crucial to be shared at no cost. Proponents of the first statement argue that sharing such vital information eventually reduces the gap between first-world countries and less developed nations. The latter claim that investments in research and academics are costly and hence should be given at a cost. I believe that the first claim outweighs the second.

Firstly, research in the fields of business, science and academics play an instrumental role in the growth of a countrie's economy. Developed countries often have the money to fund this vital fields, unlike low income nations. This leads to a major gap between the two. Sharing such crucial information to the less developed nations helps accelerate their economies, eventually improving the livelihoods of citizens.

On the other hand, some people argue that funding such developments is costly and time consuming, hence those willing to get it should atleast pay. Their argument has merit, even though it boarders on some selfishness on their part. It is my belief that those at the peak of their powers should try to uplift those struggling.

I am of the opinion helping the less developed countries to catch up with the most developed outweighs the argument by some that this projects are costly. Developed countries have the financial muscles to even initiate this projects in struggling countries hence reducing the economic gap between the two.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the economic gap between nations, the arguments remain quite general and lack specific examples or deeper analysis of how this applies to the 'business' or 'scientific research' contexts mentioned in the prompt. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete illustrations—for example, discussing how open-source medical research or patent laws in business impact global development. The position is consistent, but the supporting points could be more thoroughly extended.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Firstly', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the flow within paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, the final paragraph repeats some of the points made earlier rather than synthesizing them into a strong concluding argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence builds clearly upon the previous one would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'instrumental role', 'accelerate', and 'proponents'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'boarders on some selfishness' (should be 'borders') and 'financial muscles' (a slightly informal idiom). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'countrie's economy' (should be 'country's'), 'this vital fields' (should be 'these'), and 'this projects' (should be 'these'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and spelling errors. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of demonstrative adjectives ('this' vs 'these') will help improve your accuracy.
