Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and often unclear. For instance, the argument regarding 'sharing knowledge' focuses on teaching history to children, which is only tangentially related to the prompt's focus on scientific research and business. The arguments for 'limited sharing' are also underdeveloped, relying on vague references to 'security' and 'banking data' without explaining the broader implications for research or business innovation. The position is stated but lacks the depth and logical extension required for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is frequently disrupted by unclear phrasing and poor sentence structure. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand' and 'In conclusion', but they are often followed by sentences that do not logically follow the previous point. Referencing is sometimes confusing, and the transition between ideas is mechanical rather than fluid. The overall structure is present, but the lack of clarity in how sentences connect makes the argument difficult to follow in places.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often inaccurate, which frequently impedes communication. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'someone's argue' instead of 'some argue', 'feature' used repeatedly instead of 'future', and 'insurances' used when referring to 'instances'. The range of vocabulary is basic and repetitive, failing to demonstrate the flexibility or precision required to discuss complex topics like scientific research or business ethics. The misuse of terminology makes the intended meaning unclear in several sentences.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often distort the meaning. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'This essay discuss'), article usage, and sentence construction. Complex sentence structures are attempted but are almost always faulty, leading to confusion. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and incorrect comma usage. While the reader can generally grasp the basic intent, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence structure prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
