IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many Individuals consider that it is better to share information as widely as possible in scientific research , business and the academic world, while others argue that certain information is too valuable or sensitive to be shared freely.

Nowadays, Information plays a important role in business, academic world and scientific research. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe that information should generally shared, but with some necessary restrictions.

On the other hand, sharing information can provide many benefits to society. In scientific research, researchers can use the finding of others to discover new ideas and make further discoveries. If scientists share their results then many scientists can work on it together to solve a major problem. For instance, scientists can work to solve problems like climate change, diseases and environment pollution. In academic world, students and teacher can benefit by free research papers, books and lectures on internet. In business, some information can help companies cooperate and create a better product.

On the other side, not all the information should be available to everyone. Some information may have a significant, financial or commercial value. Foe example, some companies spend may years developing new technology, and sharing this information could allow others to copy their idea without investing the same amount of money. In addition, certain information can be private or dangerous if it falls of in wrong hands . Personal data and some sensitive scientific discoveries should be therefore be protected.

In my option, sharing information is crucial foe progress, but it should not mean that everything is made public. Information that can benefit business, scientific knowledge and society should be shared as possible.

In conclusion, although some information is too sensitive to be shared freely, the advantages of sharing information is considerable. We should knowledge which is useful while sensitive information should be protected, is the best solution.

Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'sensitive', 'commercial value', and 'intellectual property' (implied). There are some spelling errors ('Foe' instead of 'For', 'foe' instead of 'for') and minor collocation issues, such as 'should generally shared' (should generally be shared) and 'falls of in wrong hands' (falls into the wrong hands). While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and the errors occasionally draw attention to the language rather than the ideas. Increasing your use of precise academic collocations would improve this score.
