Student answer (Band 6.0)

Every day so much information is being published through various forms like books, internet etc. Some think that sharing information related to scientific research, business and the academic world as much as possible is good while others argue the other way saying some information is too valuable to be given access to others freely. I would agree that all the information should not be shared, at least not freely.

It is very easy to misuse the information related to research, business or academics. While most of the people would agree that sharing is caring but this statement is not complete. I believe that sharing can be dangerous too depending on the content of the information being shared. Even though information such as business tactics or research methods are harmless, they still can't be distributed openly to all as it losses value like that. Interested people can be identified through multiple ways in the wish of the owner of information and then it can be shared. For example I am working on end to end pipeline of self driving cars mainly focusing on real to sim transfer and safety of vehicles, I have developed algorithms for the same and before publishing I would not prefer others to take a look at those logics as those were the product of my intellect and ownership of those specific algorithms should be truthfully mine.

I can see why some think that it is good as share as much information as possible as fields such as research, business and academics are so vast that no one has ever mastered any part of these, and knowledge shared can be used for humanities growth and comfort. Well good is a grey area and principles of people dont always match, which arises conflict. One of the important and dangerous human nature is greed, it can be used to grow and help grow other or to destroy others. And as it is hard to figure out which person's intention are towards good, it is wise to leave it up to owner to decide the group of people the information should be reached.

If all people did only good deeds, if there was a clear distinction between good and bad and if society would agree and work upon one goal it would be ideal but it is foolish to wish for idealism than accepting realism of how everything work. And realistically it is better if some information is labelled as confidential and shared among only trusted. The concept of patent has decreased the fear of idea theft none the less giving away all information is not advisable in any field.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, particularly the personal example regarding self-driving car algorithms, which adds authenticity. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding 'greed' and 'human nature' is a bit abstract and could have been better linked to the specific contexts of business or research. While the position is clear, the supporting arguments occasionally lack the depth required for a higher band, tending toward generalisation rather than detailed analysis of the implications of information sharing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Even though', 'For example', and 'If all people did', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the discussion of 'greed' and the conclusion could be more tightly integrated to improve the overall logical flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, such as 'idealism', 'realism', and 'confidential', which is appropriate for the context. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'it losses value' (should be 'it loses value') and 'in the wish of the owner' (should be 'at the discretion of the owner'). These errors do not impede communication but prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('principles of people dont always match', 'which arises conflict') and punctuation errors. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'it is foolish to wish for idealism than accepting realism of how everything work'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and the errors do not significantly impede the reader's understanding of the argument.
