Student answer (Band 6.0)

Sharing information in scientific research, business and the academic world is vital. While some endorse the need to share as much information as possible, others dispute that not all information should be shared openly as some information is too important.

I mostly endorse the latter view as I believe information sharing is vital however I do believe at times it should be kept to a minimum.

In one hand, some information must not be shared freely to ensure privacy is maintained and respected.

Some examples of this include freely sharing personal information or information regarding a bank account, if oversharing of information occurs, an individual is vulnerable to a breach of privacy as well as financial exploitation. In today's world, it is easy to access information with the help of the internet and social media. Moreover, another consequence of sharing information freely is the potential risk of the information being access by criminals. Thus, crime rates are likely to increase.

Nonetheless, although it is vital information is not overshared. I believe sharing as much information as possible regarding scientific research, business and the academic world can be beneficial at times, including helping to better educate people. People are more likely to be better informed on specific areas of interest and as a result be better equipped to study or find employment in these fields which can be viewed as a positive.

To conclude, although at times it is useful to share as much information as possible in the aforementioned fields, I believe it is best to not overshare information as some information is simply too important to be shared freely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention privacy and crime in the first body paragraph, the second body paragraph regarding the benefits of sharing is quite brief and lacks specific examples or depth. To reach a higher band, you should expand on how information sharing specifically impacts scientific or business progress, rather than keeping the explanation general. Your position is clear, but the supporting arguments need more substance and logical extension to fully satisfy the 'well-developed' requirement of higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In one hand' (though this is a collocation error for 'On the one hand'), 'Moreover', 'Nonetheless', and 'To conclude'. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical. The transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph is abrupt, and some sentences feel disconnected. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'this', 'these') is used more precisely to connect ideas across sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'financial exploitation', 'breach of privacy', and 'scientific research'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'In one hand' instead of 'On the one hand' and 'dispute that not all information' (dispute is usually followed by a noun phrase or a clause, but the phrasing here is awkward). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and ensure that your word choices are natural in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you demonstrate an ability to use complex sentences, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'I believe sharing as much information as possible... can be beneficial at times, including helping to better educate people' is a bit clunky. There is also a sentence fragment: 'Nonetheless, although it is vital information is not overshared.' This should be part of the following sentence. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors that occasionally affect the flow. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex structures will help raise your score.
