IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It's a fact that sharing information enlightens the receiver as he comes across unknown or unheard ideas and then develops his own opinion. Contradictions exist, some people believe in distributing all their knowledge, whereas, others believe that some information is supposed to just keep within them. In my opinion, the context and receiver should be the basis of deciding whether or not to share the information.

The ideology of some people is to be selfless and kind in this cunning world. Because of this, they share as much information as possible in the academic and business domains and also in scientific research. For example, a scientist who has unlocked a ground-breaking solution for 4th stage cancer, sharing his own research with his co-workers. As a result, such people get deceived, when someone else claims their shared wisdom.

Contrary to this, others believe in the system of safeguarding the information which is too precious. Because of this, the information remains secure and doesn't reach the hands or ears of the wrong people. Quoting an example, a smart business person avoids discussing his business strategies with his competitors. Therefore, there are no chances of misuse of any valuable information.

In my opinion, I support the view of thinking before uttering any sort of information. For me, sharing any information, whether verbal or written, depends entirely on the context and receiver. Based on the context, if I believe that the information is too sensitive to be given out, then I would not indulge in that practice. Similarly, based on the receiver, if I feel that my knowledge could be taken advantage of by the other person, I would completely refrain from that.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of scientific research and business strategy. However, the development is somewhat limited; the examples provided, such as the scientist with cancer research, are brief and could be expanded to better illustrate the complexities of the issue. The position is consistent throughout, but the depth of analysis remains at a surface level, preventing it from reaching the higher band descriptors where ideas are more fully extended and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'Contrary to this' and 'Therefore', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their structure. The progression of ideas is clear, and the reader can easily follow the writer's argument. To improve, the writer should focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is more fluid rather than relying on simple sentence-initial connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'enlightens', 'ideology', and 'cunning', which show a reasonable range. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'supposed to just keep within them' (should be 'kept to themselves') and 'indulge in that practice' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'sharing his own research' (a fragment rather than a full sentence) and 'the information is supposed to just keep within them'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that impact the flow. The writer demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the control over these structures is inconsistent, leading to errors that occasionally distract the reader, though they do not impede overall communication.
