IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The importance of sharing information regardless scientific research, business and the academic world is an ongoing debate nowadays. While some believe that sharing information helps technological advances, others argue some information should not be shared because it could be detrimental to the society. I believe that some data should not be distributed freely.

Sharing data can contribute to technological advances. The more information published between scientific research and the academic world, the faster new scientific discoveries will be created. A good example of it was during covid-19, where researchers shared their studies and conclusions to provide a faster solution to the pandemic. The result of this union, was a new vaccine created in a record time. This salved millions of people's life, while helped recovering the global economic crises.

On the other hand, some information might be to valuable for some areas and should not be distributed. Businesses that develop a new benefitial product for society, aim on not have their information leaked, because that would potentially cause revenue loss. For instance, video-game companies try to avoid share any data about their next product. I believe that this method is a prevention to attract more costumers, while the company that makes the higher quality product tend to increase the sales. And for this reason, they have the right to not share valuable information.

To conclude, in some cases it is crucial to share important information, to benefit the population. However, in my opinion, when it comes to business, this could be detrimental to their revenue, and as such, some information should not be shared.

However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in awkward transitions like 'regardless scientific research' in the opening sentence. Additionally, some sentences lack smooth logical connections between ideas. Overall, the organizational structure is clear enough to earn a Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items such as 'detrimental', 'technological advances', and 'revenue loss'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word forms throughout the text. Examples include 'regardless scientific research' instead of 'regardless of', 'salved millions of people's life' instead of 'saved millions of lives', and 'to valuable' instead of 'too valuable'. Spelling and morphological errors occur, but they do not severely impede communication. These limitations place the lexical resource firmly at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and concessive clauses ('While some believe that...', 'If the result of this union...').
