IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In my opinion, one should not share all the information that is too important and valuable. As this situation can create misunderstandings among individuals. This is the work you done by yourself by working hard and researching for hours, and then making the final decision. The process is not easy and requires hardwork to reach here, therfore the valuable information he collected must keep as secret until he gets the reward of what he deserved. There can be a possibilty one can lose the worth of his projects. However people are curious of what they donot know and once you drop the valuable information initially all at once, they lose the interset which they were showing so far. Another reason to not drop important information in the meeting is someone might take advantage of your ideas. Likewise if a researcher working in lab shares every important detail and reading of his experiment with his other lab mate, he might copy the information, which is also considered wrong ethically. He will get the reward in free for what was not even his own work. The person who had the ability of finding things on his own might loose his spark and ability to work hard. Therefore, to avoid such situations I believe people should share the enough information to convince the other person, and to avoid confusion. But they must take care of their valuable and too important infomation that he think can affect their project or research in any way.

There is a general lack of overall structural organization, placing the response at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on general progression attempts.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate. The writer uses basic vocabulary appropriate for simple communication, such as 'hardwork', 'researching', 'project', and 'ideas'. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'therfore', 'possibilty', 'interset', 'loose' instead of 'lose', and 'infomation'. The phrasing is often repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'valuable information'. These errors and limitations cause some strain for the reader, placing the lexicon solidly in the Band 5 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as fragment sentences ('As this situation can create misunderstandings...'), subject-verb agreement issues ('people are curious of what they donot know'), and awkward phrasing ('share the enough information').
