Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The student attempts to address both views and provides a personal opinion, but the response is severely limited by its length. Reaching only 146 words, it falls far short of the required 250-word minimum, which heavily penalises Task Achievement. While the introduction outlines the two perspectives, the body paragraph remains under-developed and lacks sufficient extension or specific examples. The ideas presented, such as mentioning scientific discoveries and education, are relevant to the prompt, but they are too brief and lack the depth required to fully explore the complexities of sharing research and business data. Consequently, the position is not fully realised or supported, corresponding to a Band 4.5 level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay attempts a logical organisation by dividing the text into an introduction and a body paragraph, but the paragraphing is insufficient given the brevity of the response. Cohesive devices are used minimally and somewhat repetitively, such as 'whereas' and 'in this condition'. The overall progression of ideas is disjointed, and the transitions between sentences do not always flow smoothly. For instance, jumping from scientific discoveries directly to business and then to children's education creates a lack of clear thematic progression. Paragraphing is not used effectively to structure the arguments, resulting in a performance that aligns with Band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student displays a limited but minimally adequate vocabulary range to discuss the topic. Spelling errors are noticeable throughout the text, including 'indiviuals', 'acedamic', 'pericious', 'peple', and 'filed'. There are also frequent word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'spreading the whole research' instead of 'sharing all research' and 'pericious' used in place of 'sensitive' or 'confidential'. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary items, the high frequency of spelling and lexical errors causes some difficulty for the reader and prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complex sentences often contain structural or punctuation errors. Examples include 'Many indiviuals share the idea that spreading the whole research... is a good idea whereas others believe...' which lacks necessary comma punctuation. There are also subject-verb agreement and article errors, such as 'both conditions comes with' instead of 'come' and 'all possible information' where 'all information' would suffice. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation can cause occasional difficulty for the reader, fitting the descriptors for Band 5.0.
