IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some argue that sharing details of specific research, business and academic theories coherently is advantageous, while others condemn exposing valuable data as it could violate confidentiality for the research data. This essay describes how factual information can be beneficial and also detrimental at the same time.

Scientists from different disciplines perform research with the aim of sharing their work and creating a meaningful impact on their subject of research. The insights discovered can be utilised to build innovation and also can contribute to the country's economy directly or indirectly. For example, space researchers who deep dive into crafting spacecraft and analysing the accuracy of that machine can help them achieve targets, which therefore favours the country's reputation. Not only this, but business research is a major area where a significant number of students do collect and share information generated from raw data. The valuable information directly scales the organisation and thereby results in success.

Although spreading academic theories could create more opportunities, it also has some vulnerabilities associated with it. When it comes to businesses, the information related to logistics and confidential data cannot be freely shared as it can be breached by a third party. Especially, some information is strongly protected by not being exposed to the public easily, as it can cause chaos and create public threats. For example, data collected regarding the business workflow can be easily accessed by other competing firms.

In conlusion, limited information should be shared in order to protect the privacy of the organisation and business; sharing too much information can adversely affect the confidentiality and security.
