IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that it is a good approach to share as much information as possible in different fields, such as scientific reasearch, business and the academic world as well, while others argue that some important information should not be shared. Although it is true that people should share information as much as possible, I also believe that some valuable information should be kept private.

There are several reasons why it is a good approach of sharing information as much as possible. Firstly, scientific reasearchers want to publish their reasearch to the public so that people become interested in research. Reasearchers tend to extend their research with the the help of other people. For instance, my professor always share his research findings with me and try to motivate me by telling his research journey. Secondly, nowadays some businessmen share their business straties with public to encourage individuals to become an entreprenuer. Therefore, more young people studing in business studies to be an entrepreneur.

In contrast, the people who argue that some valuable information should not be shared give the following reasons. First of all, there are many confidential information in the scientific world, which should be kept private. For example, when a scientist invents a weapon, he follows some techniques and do some calculations. If he shares all of these information in public, some unethical people might misuse of it. So, for human well-being some information should not be shared. Another possible reason is that some businessmen think that they have done a lot of hard work to establish their businesses and if they share their ideas with general public, their competitors may increase. That is why they never want to share theie ideas in public.

To sum up, although it is true that sharing information is a good way to spread knowledge among people, people should keep in mind that information which might be dangerous for human-being should be kept private.
