IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that it is best to share lot of information in the research of science, business and the educational world. But others thought that it is much important to hide certain data that are too valuable. Now, I am going to discuss the both point of views. But in my opinion it is better to share information in the academic world and others.

Firstly, some people believe that sharing information to different feilds like academic world and scientific research is good. Because sometimes it provide some useful information to other how really need that. For instance inn commerical business, companies invest millions into research and projects, if trade secrets and panted tecnologies were instantly closed. Similarly, in the scientific research, sensitive data regarding military technology or dangerous biological pathogens must be strictly regulated to prevent security risks and misuse.

On the other hand, the unrestricted exchange of ideas dramatically accelerates scientific and academic breakthroughs. When scholars and researchers collaborate globally and publish their findings open-source, they avoid duplicating efforts and can build upon each other's work. For instance, the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines was largely made possible because scientists worldwide immediately shared the genetic sequence of the virus. Similarly, open access to academic research democratizes education, allowing students and institutions in developing countries to benefit from cutting-edge knowledge.

In the conclusion, some data is important to share but in some cases data become dangerous when it is shared furthermore. But, I thought information is important to share.

Furthermore, referencing and logical sequencing falter in the first body paragraph where examples of protecting information are placed inside a paragraph meant to support the benefits of sharing information. Paragraphing is used, but the internal logical flow needs tighter control. Cohesive devices are occasionally used inaccurately, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'unrestricted exchange,' 'democratizes education,' and 'genetic sequence.' However, there are notable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'feilds' for fields, 'inn' for in, 'commerical' for commercial, and 'panted' for patented. Phrasing like 'share lot of information' and 'educational world' lacks precision. While communication is not severely impeded, these repeated errors and lapses in collocation place the lexical control at a solid Band 6 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures with varying degrees of success. There are several grammatical errors and awkward constructions, such as 'it is best to share lot of information,' 'others thought that it is much important,' and 'data become dangerous when it is shared furthermore.' Punctuation and article usage also show frequent inaccuracies, as seen in 'in the research of science' and 'in the conclusion.' Because the errors are frequent but rarely impede overall comprehension, the performance aligns with Band 5.5.
