IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
It is often argued that it is beneficial to share all the knowledge you have in scientific research, business and the academic world. Whereas other believe that there is only few information that needed to be shared, because it is crutial or valuable. Although, both views hav etheir own merits, I firmly believe that only a useful piece of informatiom should be shared.
Firstly, the main reason for sharing all the data is that it will be advantageous for other people. There are numerous numbers of facts , which were not known by everybody. For instance

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it stops abruptly at only 96 words and cuts off mid-sentence. Consequently, the task is only addressed minimally and the ideas are severely under-developed. Although the student attempts to introduce both views and state a personal opinion in the introduction ('Although, both views hav etheir own merits, I firmly believe...'), the body paragraphs are incomplete, leaving the arguments unsupported and undeveloped. To achieve a higher band score, the writer must ensure they write at least 250 words and fully develop all parts of the prompt with relevant explanations and examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
Due to the extreme brevity of the text, it is difficult to fully assess organizational progression and paragraphing. The response begins with a standard introductory frame and attempts a logical transition using 'Firstly', but the second paragraph breaks off immediately after an incomplete example ('For instance'). Cohesive devices are minimal, and referencing is limited by the incomplete nature of the response. Paragraphing is introduced, but proper overall structural progression cannot be demonstrated when the essay is cut off so early. Developing full paragraphs with clear topic sentences and supporting details is essential for higher scores in this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used in the snippet is generally basic and demonstrates some noticeable errors in spelling and word choice. For instance, words like 'crutial' (crucial), 'hav etheir' (have their), and 'informatiom' (information) contain spelling mistakes. The student does attempt some slightly less common vocabulary such as 'advantageous' and 'beneficial', but the limited output restricts the range of lexical items displayed. To improve this score, the writer needs to produce a full essay, eliminate basic spelling errors, and incorporate a wider variety of precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to scientific research and business.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates control over some basic sentence structures, such as the introductory complex sentence ('It is often argued that...').
