Student answer (Band 6.5)
Some people believe that it is beneficial to share as much data related to scientific research, education and business. Others argue that some information can be protected. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe that information can be share as much as possible, although sensitive information should be protected.
On the one hand, sharing data can be crucial for individuals and societies. In scientific research, researchers can build on each other’s discoveries instead of repeating the same work. This can speed up of development in medicines, technologies and social problems. Similarly, sharing information in academic institution allowed students and teachers to learn from wide range of sources. For instance, when researchers publish their findings online, scientists in other countries can use these results to conduct further studies and develop new ideas.
On the other hand, some information is too valuable or sensitive to share freely. In business world, companies spend huge amount of money and time to discover new products or technology. If the research or strategies publically allowed, competitors will copy them and gain unfair advantage. In addition, some scientific data have personal data, security issues or potentially dangerous technologies, so unrestricted cause harm to them. for example, a company developing a new productmay keep his design confidential untill the product is launched. As a result, they gain unpredictable profits and generate revenue.
In conculsion, sharing information is essential in scientific research and education progress, but it should not be restricted. Valuable commercial information, private data and knowledge that create serious problems should be protected. Therefore, a balance between openness and responsible protection is the most suitable approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the views in favour of unrestricted sharing and those advocating for protection, while also stating a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which is characteristic of this level. For instance, the arguments regarding scientific and educational collaboration are clearly supported with examples like publishing findings online. On the other hand, the discussion on business strategies and sensitive information contains some under-developed points and minor generalisations, such as 'some scientific data have personal data, security issues or potentially dangerous technologies, so unrestricted cause harm to them.' To reach a higher level, all supporting arguments would need to be extended with greater depth and equal elaboration throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the final conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, starting appropriately with transitional phrases such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand.' Cohesion within sentences is generally maintained, though referencing and cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen in phrases like 'so unrestricted cause harm to them' where a noun or object is missing after the adjective. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the contrasting viewpoints. To achieve a higher band, the essay would need more flexible and seamless use of cohesive devices, ensuring that connections between sentences are always smooth and completely unobtrusive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'unrestricted,' 'confidential,' and 'commercial information.' However, there are noticeable word choice, collocation, and word form errors that occasionally impede smooth reading, such as 'share as much as possible' where 'shared' is intended, 'speed up of development' instead of 'speed up development,' 'academic institution' missing a plural form, and 'In business world' lacking a definite article. Additionally, there are spelling errors like 'publically' instead of 'publicly' and 'conculsion' instead of 'conclusion.' While communication is not severely hindered, these inaccuracies prevent the writing from reaching a higher lexical band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordinate clauses and varied structures like conditional and relative clauses. There are some grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues such as 'some scientific data have' and prepositional or structural omissions like 'unrestricted cause harm to them' and 'keep his design confidential' where pronoun agreement is flawed ('his' instead of 'their'). Punctuation also shows occasional lapses, such as missing spaces after periods and commas. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede overall communication, and the basic meaning remains clear. To progress to a higher band, the writer would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain tighter grammatical control across all structures.
