Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views regarding the sharing of information in research, business, and academia, and provides a clear opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. For instance, the argument about financial burdens on students through accessible academic research is relevant, but the counter-argument regarding government intervention and secrets is somewhat under-developed and lacks specific clarity. The position is maintained throughout, yet certain points tend to over-generalize without sufficient supporting detail, placing this criterion at the current level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical progression. Paragraphing is utilised adequately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs representing both views, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one side of the coin' and 'Furthermore' are employed to structure the text, though referencing and transitional phrases occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The half band is achieved because the organization successfully guides the reader through the discussion, while falling just short of the flexible and seamless cohesion characteristic of a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used provides an adequate range for the task, successfully communicating the main ideas. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'financial burden' and 'independent firms', but there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and word formation, such as 'information are too valuable' instead of 'is', and 'protect their own researcher' instead of 'research'. Spelling and word-choice errors do occasionally occur, such as 'other help', but they do not severely impede communication, fitting the descriptor for an adequate yet limited lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Issues include article omission and misuse, pluralization errors like 'various thing', subject-verb agreement problems, and incorrect prepositions inside grammatical patterns, such as 'to shared freely'. Although these errors rarely completely obscure the meaning, their frequency and the presence of faulty complex structures prevent the response from achieving a higher rating.
