Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate about whether information in scientific research, business and the academic world should be shared as widely as possible. While some individuals argue that certain knowledge is too valuable to be made freely available. I believe that information should be shared wherever possible, but there are situations in which confidentality is necessary.

On the one hand, sharing information promotes progress globally. In scientific research, reseachers can build and develop an existing ideas, discoveries, findings and experiments from the past experiences. Therefore, this can accelerate the development of new medicines and technologies. Similarly, people and students can benefit from the access of research papers because it enables them to learn from a wide range of sources and ca contribute to future research.

On the other hand, there are valid reasons for restricting access to certain types of information. In business world, companies invest considerable amounts of money developing products, technologies and marketing strategies however competitors could freely access this information, businesses might suffer significant financial losses. In addition, personal information should not necessarily be available to everyone, hence such information could be misused.

In my opinion, balanced approach is the most sensible solution. Information that involves personal privacy, commercial interests should be carefully protected. Nevertheless, education and scientific research information can be shared freely to develop the new ideas and learn from the past experiences.

In conclusion, the information which benefits to the society and which is helpful for researchers and encourage them to develop new products and services. However, business data, personal information should be restricted. Thus. it can be dangerous.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the benefits of free information sharing and the necessity of restrictions in areas such as business and privacy, while also clearly stating the writer's own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Note that 8 words copied from the task prompt were not counted toward the minimum length requirement. Ideas are generally relevant, but some are slightly under-developed or repetitive, particularly in the conclusion where sentences feel somewhat incomplete and do not fully integrate all previous points. To reach a higher band, the main body arguments could be extended further with deeper explanation or more specific real-world examples rather than broad generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, separating the introduction, the two opposing views, the personal opinion, and the conclusion logically. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In my opinion' are used to guide the reader through the discussion. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty, such as the abrupt transition and sentence fragment near the end ('Thus. it can be dangerous.'). Referencing and paragraph transitions could be smoother and more sophisticated to achieve a truly seamless progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'accelerate the development', 'considerable amounts of money', and 'commercial interests'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices that prevent a higher score, including 'confidentality' (spelling), 'In business world' (missing article), 'access of research papers' (preposition error), and 'balanced approach' missing an article. These minor slips and occasional imprecise word choices do not impede communication, placing the lexical range firmly in the middle tier.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordinate clauses and relative structures. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include sentence structure issues in the second sentence ('While some individuals argue that certain knowledge is too valuable to be made freely available. I believe...'), punctuation errors like a full stop instead of a comma before 'however' ('...strategies however competitors...'), and a rogue full stop in the conclusion ('Thus. it can be dangerous.'). While these errors rarely impede overall communication, the frequency of structural slips prevents the grammar from achieving a higher rating.
