Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is an ongoing debate about how much information should be shared in scientific research, business and the academic world. This essay will discuss both views, but I believe that most information should be shared openly, however, sensitive information should be protected.
One major advantage of sharing information is that it speeds up scientific discovery. Sharing of discoveries helps to prevent duplication of effort in scientific research. It enhances teamwork which is essential for growth and advancement among researchers. For example the accessibility of information on COVID 19 enhanced the quick discovery of the vaccine used to cure COVID19. This shows their is a lot of benefits that comes from sharing of information.
Those who oppose unrestricted access to information point out that some information can be exploited if released to the public. For example, in the manufacturing industries, the formulation of ingredients used for production might be misused if shared with a competing counterpart.. Additionally, there are some key information about safety of a nation, if released may threaten the peace of a country. Withholding of information from the public can also be of advantage to the people as much as releasing of the information.
In conclusion, although some people might argue that releasing of information is very advantageous, as it prevents repetition of already verified information, i believe some information are too sensitive to be released hence a blend of the two views is very important for growth and development of any society and the world at large.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on information sharing and providing an opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, please note that the word count is 242 words, which falls short of the 250-word minimum requirement (8 words copied from the prompt were excluded). Ideas are relevant, but some are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the example regarding the COVID-19 vaccine is mentioned briefly without deep elaboration, and the point about national security is stated generally rather than explored thoroughly. To reach a higher band, all ideas would need to be fully developed and extended with more substantial supporting evidence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is used adequately, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs discussing opposing viewpoints, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "One major advantage", "Additionally", and "In conclusion", though some referencing and transitions can occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive (e.g., repeating phrases like "releasing of information"). To move to the next band, cohesion could be made more flexible and subtle, ensuring that referencing across sentences flows entirely naturally without any stiffness.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as "duplication of effort", "unrestricted access", and "exploited". However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as "cure COVID19" (rather than treat or prevent), "key information about safety of a nation" (rather than sensitive national security information), and spelling/punctuation slips like the missing apostrophe in "their is" and "i believe". These errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, a wider range of sophisticated vocabulary with precise collocations must be used consistently with fewer slip-ups.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional and concessive clauses ("although some people might argue that..."). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ("For example the accessibility", "be of advantage"), subject-verb agreement issues ("their is a lot of benefits", "some information are too sensitive"), and capitalization errors ("i believe"). Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate tighter control over articles and subject-verb agreement.
