Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals think that sharing as much knowledge as possible in scientific research, business and the academic field. Others think that some knowledge is too essential or too pricey to be given out freely. It is important to keep some information be protected because this will grauntee long term opportunities for the individual or organization that first discover. On the other hand, this can hamper the development in the field. In my opinion, knowledge should be free for all to a certain extend because it will accelarate the development in the field.
It is completely understandable that some people want to keep the knowledge that they discover through thier own hard works and investments. By patenting the knowledge, they can claim benefits that come with that for a long time. They can continue their studies and even discover new information based on the original knowledge. A famous fried chicken franchise, KFC, has long kept its receipe for secret and legally secured it through patenting.
However, if everyone keep their knowledge to themselves, this will lead to insufficient information in the industry. New information is crucial to drive competitions which will help accelerate the development in the field. Today's free market thrives on competitions and industry developments. For example, in medical field, it is important for researchers to share their new discoveries via publications. Only then, the other researchers can conduct new studies and develop new kowledge based on the previous findings. This process can lead to the discoveries of new cures for the diseases which will not only benefit the field but also the mankind. Due to the above reasons, I agree that new knowledge should be shared freely at least to a certain level.
In conclusion, some people think it is best to keep new information to themselves while other think it is better to share new knowledge publically. I believe that in order to encourage new developments and competitions in the field and ultimately for the good of mankind, it is best to share new information to a certain level at least.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses both views and gives a clear position: information should be shared, but only to a certain extent. The discussion of protecting discoveries through patents and the medical-research example are relevant, and the conclusion reinforces the writer’s view. This meets the task well, with some elements showing the fuller development expected at the next level. However, the case for keeping information private is less fully explained: the KFC example is mentioned, but its connection to patents and the broader value of protecting research is not made precise. The claim that sharing creates competition also needs clearer reasoning. Develop these points with specific consequences or examples to make the argument more consistently convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The contrast between the positions is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This gives the response coherent organisation, although some linking is mechanical and a few connections between ideas are not fully clear. For example, the move from patenting knowledge to KFC’s secret recipe does not explain how the example supports the point about patents. The phrase “Due to the above reasons” also repeats the preceding argument rather than smoothly advancing it. Use clearer references and connect examples explicitly to the claims they illustrate.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “patenting,” “publications,” “discoveries,” and “development,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “insufficient information in the industry.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “grauntee,” “accelarate,” “thier,” “receipe,” and “kowledge.” Some collocations are awkward, including “claim benefits that come with that” and “drive competitions.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main argument, but they make the expression less natural. Check spelling carefully and learn topic-specific collocations, such as “stimulate competition” and “build on previous findings.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay includes both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if everyone keep their knowledge to themselves” and a relative clause in “which will not only benefit the field.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “some people think that sharing …” is followed by an incomplete clause, while “if everyone keep” should use a singular verb. In “it is important to keep some information be protected,” the verb pattern is incorrect; use “keep some information protected” or “ensure that it is protected.” These issues are generally manageable, but more accurate control of clauses and agreement would strengthen the writing.
