Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There are two types of people when it comes to sharing certain ideas or educational materials related to research based studies or a specific business. One of the groups is in the favor of doing so, while other refrains from pouring in important knowledge everywhere.

Some researchers or accomplished businessmen feel that it's a nice thing to spread as much information to the fellow colleagues,as possible. This is relatively a good thing to do because there is a best thing about knowledge that it always multiplies when you share it with others. Doing so also increases the chances for you to learn more as you can come across a new point from the person or the company you are sharing it with. The community Dentistry or Medicine departments in the colleges work via the same approach where they share the knowledge they have and in exchange they get ideas from fellow researchers and collectively they come up with a good research project.

However, at the same time there are bunch of persons or companies against this idea where they don't want to leak the useful information. As much as sharing information is good in research based projects, it carries significant harms in business related fields. Businesses run on profits and these are those useful ideas or thoughts which are actually put into solid frameworks to get a business sucessful. If a specific piece of intellectual property reaches to the competitior, it can go in the negative favor of the company as the former would start working on the similar idea.

In conclusion. as much as some folks are in favor of exchanging ideas related to specific field of work or studies, almost same number of people, if not more, are against it. It depends what the information is about and also relates to the specific scenario and conditions associated.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both perspectives and give relevant reasons: sharing can generate new ideas, while businesses may lose an advantage if intellectual property reaches competitors. The example of college dentistry or medicine departments also supports the benefits of collaboration. However, the discussion is unevenly developed: the case for sharing is explained more fully than the risks, which rely mainly on the possibility of a competitor copying an idea. Your own position is not sufficiently clear. The conclusion says that the issue depends on the information and circumstances, but does not state which view you support or explain how you would balance openness with protection. Make your opinion explicit and develop both sides with more specific reasoning or examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “However” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the shift between positions. Within paragraphs, ideas generally progress from a claim to an explanation and example. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The opening describes “two types of people” without clearly framing the central issue, and the final paragraph repeats the contrast rather than drawing the discussion together into a definite conclusion. Phrases such as “Doing so” and “the former” also require readers to infer their exact references. Use clearer topic sentences and more explicit links between each reason and its example.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “intellectual property,” “research,” “competitior,” and “profits,” and you attempt less common expressions such as “solid frameworks.” However, several choices are awkward or imprecise, which limits clarity and naturalness. For example, “pouring in important knowledge everywhere” does not convey the idea of restricting access naturally, while “a bunch of persons” is too informal for this essay. There are also spelling errors, including “sucessful” and “competitior,” and phrases such as “research based projects” would be clearer as “research-based projects.” Aim for accurate academic collocations and check spelling, rather than choosing elaborate wording that does not fit the meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “where,” and “as,” and the main ideas are generally understandable. Some sentence structures and punctuation are not controlled consistently. For example, “There are two types of people … One of the groups is in the favor …” uses an awkward construction, while “In conclusion. as much as…” incorrectly separates the introductory phrase with a full stop. The sentence beginning “Businesses run on profits and these are those useful ideas…” is difficult to follow because its clauses are not clearly connected. Review sentence boundaries, articles, and clause structure, and use complex sentences only when the relationship between ideas is clear. More consistently accurate sentences would make your reasoning easier to follow.
