Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this contemporary world, information plays an essential role in scientific research, business and education. While some people believe that sharing information freely can benefit society, others argue that certain information should remain private because it has significant financial or strategic value. In my opinion, information shoul generally be shared to encourage progress, although sensitive and confidential details should be protected.

To begin with, sharing information can bring several benefits to society. When scientists and researchers exchange their findings, they can learn from one another and develop new solutions to important problems more quickly. For example, medical research can share their results, other scientists can use this knowledge to develop better treatments for serious diseases. Furthermore, students and teachers benefit from access to academic materials because it allow other people from different background to improve their knowledge and skills. In business world, sharing appropriate information can also encourage cooperation between companies, as a result it's lead to development of better products and services.

On the other hand, some information is too valuable or sensitive to made it publically available. Businesses often invest considerable time and money in developing their products, technologies and ideas. If competitors could access this details without permission, they might copy them and gain an unfair advantage. For instance, a company that develops new technology may lose its competitive position if it shares its design before securing legal protection. Further more, confidential informationm, such as customers personal details and medical records, must be protected to prevent misuse and maintain people privacy.

In conclusion, although keeping certain information private is necessary to protect business interests and personal data, I believe that sharing information should generally be encouraged. Scientific discoveries and educational knowledge can benefit a large number of people provided that confidential and commercially sensitive information is handled responsibly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both views and gives a clear, consistent position: information should generally be shared, while sensitive or commercially valuable material should be protected. The discussion is relevant and supported with examples, including medical research, academic access, business competition and personal records. This meets the task well. To make the argument more fully developed, explain the examples’ implications in greater depth. For instance, the point about academic materials could clarify how wider access reduces educational inequality, while the business example could distinguish legitimate protection of intellectual property from withholding information that would benefit the public. Some claims, such as sharing leading to better products, remain broad, but the overall position and supporting ideas are clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-paragraph structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two perspectives, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. Within paragraphs, examples generally follow the claims they support. Some connections are less smoothly expressed: “In business world” introduces a new area abruptly, and “as a result it's lead” does not clearly connect the cause and outcome. The medical-research example also needs a clearer link between sharing findings and developing treatments. More precise transitions and reference links would make the progression feel less formulaic and more consistently fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “strategic value,” “competitive position,” “legal protection,” and “confidential information,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “commercially sensitive information.” However, some word-choice, collocation and spelling errors reduce precision: “publically available” should be “publicly available,” “informationm” is a typo, and “people privacy” needs a more natural expression such as “people’s privacy.” Phrases such as “share their results” and “better products and services” are understandable but general. Aim to use accurate collocations and check spelling and possessive forms so that your vocabulary is more consistently controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession in the introduction (“although sensitive…”) and conditional clauses such as “If competitors could access this details…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Examples include “it allow” instead of “it allows,” “from different background” instead of “from different backgrounds,” and “too valuable or sensitive to made it” instead of “too valuable or sensitive to be made.” The sentence beginning “For example, medical research can share their results, other scientists…” joins two clauses without a suitable connector. Review subject–verb agreement, articles and plurals, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries. Greater accuracy in these areas would strengthen the range of structures you already attempt.
