IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

While sharing all the information you have in scientific research, work and educational departments is considered a good approach, some people argue that some sensitive details should not be shared in any context. In my opinion, while there are valid arguments on both sides, I firmly believe that some confidential data should not be revealed among any of the three mentioned disciplines.

On the one hand, a major argument in favor of discussing everything is that it provides immediate practical and emotional benefits. When individuals primarily discuss every aspect with their colleagues, friends or partners, it ultimately strengthens thier trust on each other and also their teamwork with which they make remarkable progress in their respective field. A clear example of this can be seen in large firms that they achieve major milestones by their team work where all the members discuss their problems and findings freely.

On the other hand, I would argue that unhiding whatever you know to all the professinal environments can lead to oversharing which has many serious disadvantages. This can chiefly let others to know about your strengths and weaknesses which they can misuse in future as your progress can unintentionally trigger jealousy in your coworkers. Additionally, your business partners can also get the chance to scam you and ruin your practical growth. For instance, recent studies show that the most scam cases reported this year are done by the victims' acquaintances.

In conclusion, although sharing everything across research analysis, business and academic fields possess its merits in certain contexts, I reiterate oversharing yields far more negative impacts leading to personal destruction. Moving forward, many professionals working under large interprises also avoid oversharing to ensure their rapid development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both positions and state a clear view: you acknowledge benefits of sharing, then argue that confidential information should be protected. The examples of teamwork in firms and the risk of business partners misusing information are relevant to the topic. However, the response does not fully develop the task’s focus on scientific research, business and academia: most of the reasoning concerns personal trust, workplace relationships and individual scams, with little specific consideration of research findings or academic knowledge. The claim that sharing “everything” strengthens teamwork also needs qualification, and the example about scam cases is not explained or connected clearly to the three fields. Develop each side with more precise, field-specific reasons and support your opinion with a balanced explanation of what should and should not be shared.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. Within paragraphs, however, some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “teamwork with which they make remarkable progress” does not clearly show how the ideas connect, and “Moving forward” introduces a final point that feels added rather than developed from the conclusion. The reference to “the three mentioned disciplines” is also broad, since the body mainly discusses workplace relationships. Improve cohesion by making each paragraph’s central point explicit, linking examples directly to that point, and avoiding a new supporting claim in the final sentence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic-related vocabulary, including “sensitive details,” “confidential data,” “oversharing,” “milestones,” and “misuse.” These choices help communicate the contrast between openness and protection. However, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions limit precision: “unhiding whatever you know,” “trust on each other,” “professional environments,” and “personal destruction” do not fit naturally in context. There are also spelling errors such as “thier,” “professinal,” and “interprises.” Some phrases, including “practical and emotional benefits,” are vague for an essay about research, business and academia. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling; for instance, describe sharing research findings, protecting commercially sensitive information, or safeguarding intellectual property.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in the introduction (“while there are valid arguments on both sides”) and a conditional clause (“which they can misuse in future”). Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical patterns are not controlled consistently, however. In “large firms that they achieve major milestones,” the relative clause is incorrectly formed; write “large firms achieve major milestones” or “firms that achieve major milestones.” “Trust on each other” also uses an incorrect preposition, while “sharing … possess its merits” has a subject–verb agreement problem. Review relative clauses, agreement and preposition patterns, and proofread long sentences to ensure their clauses connect clearly.
