Student answer (Band 6.0)

People have different views about sharing information with public. While some believe that it is better to exchange data with world, others argue that content should be kept confidential. In my opinion the data should be shared for learners to generate new research.

On the one hand, some people believe that the facts should be publish for education, health care and researchers and to inspire for younger generations. Sharing information can improve access to knowledge. Moreover, students and reserchers can learn from new discoveries and use them for future research. For example, scientific research published online content can help university students, understand new technologies and encourage them to conduct own research. This can contribute to educational development and further innovation.

On the other hand, some argue that the information should not be made publicly available. Some data has significant commercial, financial or security value. In addition, if it shared freely, competitors or unauthorised people could misuse it. For instance, a company may have confidential information about new product or technology. Releasing it before the product is launched could allow competitors to copy the data. Therefore, some information needs controlled access rather than completely free sharing.

In my opinion, data should generally shared beacuse it benefits education and scientific progress, but sensitive or highly valuable information should be protected.

In conclusion, although both views have merit, I believe that information sharing can be a part of helping to enhance the knowledge to public, yet sensitive and valuable data should be protected from public. So, the information should be shared responsibly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the discussion and give a clear opinion: information should generally be shared, while sensitive material should be protected. The examples about students learning from published research and competitors copying a product are relevant and help explain the two positions. This meets the task’s main requirements. However, some points are more fully developed than others. The benefits are mainly linked to education and scientific progress, while the risks are described broadly; explaining a specific security or commercial consequence would add depth. Your conclusion repeats the position but could synthesise the discussion more precisely. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation of its impact to make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the structure explicit. This is a strength, and the paragraphs generally keep to one main purpose. To make the organisation more fluent, reduce the reliance on formulaic transitions and connect ideas within paragraphs more naturally. For example, the move from the benefits of sharing to the example could be integrated more smoothly. The final paragraph also repeats the opinion already stated immediately before it; combining these points would create a tighter ending.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “confidential,” “commercial,” “unauthorised,” “competitors,” and “scientific progress.” These choices help communicate the contrast between open access and protecting valuable information. However, the range and control are uneven, with several noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation problems: “reserchers,” “should be publish,” “conduct own research,” and “shared responsibly” alongside less natural phrases such as “exchange data with world.” Some repetition of “information,” “data,” and “sharing” also limits flexibility. Aim to learn topic-specific phrases as complete collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise wording would make your ideas sound clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening with “While,” a conditional sentence beginning “if,” and a relative clause in “information about new product or technology.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the overall meaning is clear. Some grammatical errors are present, however. For example, “the facts should be publish” needs a passive form, “if it shared freely” is missing an auxiliary, and “data should generally shared” has an incorrect verb pattern. Articles are also omitted in “about new product,” and punctuation is missing in “future research. For example.” Review passive constructions, auxiliary verbs, and articles, then proofread sentence boundaries. Greater accuracy in these areas would strengthen your control of the structures you attempt.
