IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic: Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the era of technology, information is becoming increasingly prevalent and accesible among people. Some people argue that the publication of professional information is beneficial whereas the opposers contend some of them ought not to be shared with no charge as they are valueable. In this essay, I will shed light on both views and present my own opinion.

On the one hand, the publication of significant information bring about several benefits. One of the reason is that they can be a vital material for academic learning. Since today's education requires students broaden their horizon extensively, free information online enable them to do the research with convinience. For example, with a device, any students can find information easily through Google browser and they provide a wide range of information on different field. Furthermore, it can help people get up to date with the global status. In the world where information is an inevitable part of life, grasping them would help people to understand how the Earth is changing day by day. This is crucial since it helps people to be more flexible in the globalized world. A prime example is when people see the unstable fluctuation of petrol price, they can conclude that it is a result of ongoing wars in the world and eventually, people would strive for the peaceful world.

On the other hand, this action can have some drawbacks. Firstly, some information can associate with a country's placement tactically therefore it is not just simple to share them prevalently. This is because in the world of many enemies, this could be the best source to exploit. For example, manufacturing technology in Japan can be considered confidential as they have a unparralled power that if any other countries own the innovation, it can directly affect the Japan's total revenue. Secondly, when the author of the inforamation dedicated for their work, free access to it is not a way to respect their endeavor. Some people spent years on a scientific breakthrough and when they succeed with it, payments is a way to get access. This is a good action to embrace their perseverance and in the long term, encourage other scientist to follow their career.

In conclusion, although both views can be true in a limited extent but I agree with the latter views as it helps governments to be safe from other sides as well as people can have an encouragement for discovering the new horizon.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the discussion and give a clear preference for protecting valuable information in the conclusion. The examples about access to online research, national manufacturing technology and rewarding scientific work are relevant to the topic. However, the two positions are not developed equally: the benefits of sharing are explained through education and awareness of world events, while the case for restricting access focuses mainly on national security and payment for researchers. Some links, such as the petrol-price example, are asserted rather than fully explained, and the conclusion’s phrase “both views can be true in a limited extent” leaves your overall position less precise than it could be. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation of its consequences and qualify your opinion more directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “Furthermore,” and “On the other hand” helps readers follow the discussion, and the ideas generally progress within each paragraph. This already provides a coherent arrangement. At times, however, linking is mechanical or the relationship between ideas is not fully clear. For example, the move from understanding global change to petrol prices and wars needs a more explicit explanation, while “This is crucial since it helps people…” repeats the preceding point rather than advancing it. Some references, including “they” and “this action,” could also be made more precise. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect examples explicitly to the claim they support.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic and attempt some less common expressions, including “globalized world,” “confidential,” “scientific breakthrough,” and “perseverance.” These choices help convey ideas about research, security and innovation. However, several word-choice, collocation and spelling errors reduce precision: “information is becoming increasingly prevalent and accesible,” “publication of professional information,” and “share them prevalently” are not natural formulations. There are also misspellings such as “valueable,” “convinience,” and “inforamation.” Some wording is vague, including “the global status” and “other sides.” Aim for accurate topic-specific collocations and check spelling carefully; clearer choices such as “access to research,” “widely available,” and “national security” would make the argument more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses beginning with “Since,” “when,” and “if,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, particularly with subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals and sentence construction. For example, “the publication … bring about” should use a singular verb, while “One of the reason” needs a plural noun. In “free information online enable them,” the subject–verb agreement is also incorrect. Other examples include “any students,” “a unparralled power,” and “payments is.” The long sentence beginning “This is because in the world of many enemies” is awkwardly constructed. Review agreement and article use, and divide complex sentences when their relationships become difficult to control.
