Student answer (Band 6.0)

Information in scientific research, business and the academic world can bring significant change in a country or in the whole world. However, there are speculations whether these information can be useful or harmful to the people. People often wonder if it is worth to protect these information or share it to the rest of the world.

The three areas are believed to have great influence in the development of a nation. Breakthrough in scientific research and the academic world can change the future of a country and its people, while the information concerning the business sector keeps the country's economy stable.

Some people believe that relevant information in these 3 sectors are supposed to be shared freely for everyone to know. There are benefits of sharing it such as, helping to develop a cure for a long term illness like cancer. Another is to develop electronics that can be helpful to people's everyday life. It can be seen in today's generation how information is put to good use. People are enjoying the use of cellular phones, laptop, internet, vaccines, new medication, and a lot more.

On the contrary, some people disagree on this idea. They believe that it should be protected. It can be used as weapons of mass destruction. It can create chaos in the economy. There are wars going on in the other parts of the world. Conspiracy theories are also publicized. For instance, countries that are building robots as war machines, advanced nuclear weapons, virus, and substances that can eliminate thousands of people.

In my own opinion, it will always depend on what kind of information people should share in public. Each project or information has to be discussed by the right people before deciding whether it is for the public to see. We have to be mindful of what data we put out there.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the discussion and gives a clear personal view: information should be shared or protected depending on its nature. The examples of medical research and useful technology support the benefits of sharing, while weapons and economic disruption illustrate risks. However, some points are asserted rather than explained. For example, the claim that information “can create chaos in the economy” is not developed with a specific mechanism or example, and the benefits of sharing are illustrated more than analysed. The opening paragraph also introduces the issue broadly without establishing the writer’s position until the final paragraph. Develop each side with clearer reasoning and make the opinion more explicit earlier to strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on the importance of the fields, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. The contrast marker “On the contrary” helps signal the shift to the opposing view, and examples generally follow the claims they support. This clear structure meets the expected level, with some progression across the response. However, the second paragraph is somewhat detached from the discussion that follows, and the final paragraph introduces the writer’s position rather late. Connections between claims could also be more explicit; for instance, explain how sharing research leads to the medical and technological outcomes listed. Use linking and referencing to show relationships between ideas, rather than relying mainly on paragraph order.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for discussing the topic, and the response attempts relevant terms such as “breakthrough,” “weapons of mass destruction,” “conspiracy theories,” and “advanced nuclear weapons.” These choices help convey both the benefits and risks of sharing information. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural expressions, including “these information,” “share it to the rest of the world,” and “the right people.” The repeated use of broad words such as “information” and “people” also limits precision. Choose more specific terms where possible—for example, distinguish research findings, commercial data, and sensitive technical knowledge—and check common collocations. This would make the argument more precise while retaining the accessible vocabulary already used.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including the contrast in “while the information concerning the business sector keeps the country's economy stable” and the conditional idea in “It can be used as weapons of mass destruction.” Meaning remains clear throughout, although some grammatical errors occur. For example, “these information” has a number-agreement problem, and “Some people believe that relevant information … are supposed” has a mismatch between the singular uncountable noun and the verb. The sentence beginning “There are benefits of sharing it such as” also needs clearer punctuation and construction. Review agreement with uncountable nouns, articles, and sentence punctuation, and practise combining related short claims into accurate complex sentences.
