Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to address the task by comparing the current town centre with the proposed development. However, the description is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, the student claims that the bus station and car park are 'converted into shops' and that 'new housing is removed,' which contradicts the visual evidence provided in the maps. The overview is weak and fails to capture the main trends, such as the expansion of the shopping centre or the addition of the new housing area. The information is presented in a way that is difficult to follow, and the lack of clarity regarding the changes significantly impacts the overall task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression of ideas is frequently interrupted by confusing phrasing and poor sentence structure. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore' and 'In conclusion,' but they are often applied incorrectly or do not link ideas logically. The referencing is unclear; for instance, the phrase 'other was planned development' is grammatically incomplete and makes the transition between the two maps difficult to follow. The overall structure lacks the necessary flow required for a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are several instances of incorrect word choice, such as 'faculties' (likely meaning facilities) and 'builded' (incorrect verb form). The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe urban planning features, relying on basic descriptions like 'one road' or 'everybody can use one road.' While the meaning is generally discernible, the lack of variety and the frequent errors in word formation and collocation prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede readability. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('only one way allow'), tense usage ('have been seen'), and sentence fragments ('WHICH DESCIBES THAT WHAT DEVELOPMENTS DEVELOP'). Punctuation is also problematic, with erratic spacing and missing spaces after periods. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences that are often poorly constructed. The frequency of these errors is high, which significantly affects the clarity of the communication.
