IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The maps below show the centre of a small town called Islip as it is now, and plans for its development.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The two maps show the town centre of Islip at the present time and how it is planned to change in the future.

Overall, the town centre will be developed a lot. A new road will be built around the centre, and more public facilities and houses will be added. However, the school and park will remain in the same place.

At the moment, there is a main road passing through the centre with shops on both sides. The countryside is located to the north, while housing is in the south. There is also a school in the southwest corner and a park in the southeast. In the future, the main road will become a pedestrian-only street, so cars will not be allowed there. A dual carriageway will surround the town centre to reduce traffic. On the north side, a bus station, a shopping centre and a car park will be built. Besides this, two new housing areas will be added. These changes will make the town centre more modern and easier for people to use.
