IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The maps below show the centre of a small town called Islip as it is now, and plans for its development.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The illustration presents the development plan of Islip, the centre of a small town from the current blueprint.
Overall, significant transformation has been planned for Islip town centre. The countryside is going to develop into a dual carriageway surrounding a town centre.
The current main road is replaced by a walkway for pedestrians only and a new dual carriageway is going to be built encircling a town centre for vehicles. A shopping centre towards the south side of the main road remains the same. On the North side of the main road, there is one row of shops only, which will be transformed into a small shopping area with a transportation facility such as new bus station and car parking space for visitors.
There are many new houses that are planned to be built on the south side of a dual carriageway. A park on the south-east side of the map remains the same as before. A school area is being separated from the centre by a newly build circular road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the Islip development plan, including the new dual carriageway, the pedestrianization of the main road, and the addition of new housing and facilities. You provided a clear overview and made relevant comparisons between the current and future states. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are accurately described; for instance, you mentioned the shopping centre remains the same, but the map indicates it is being replaced by a new shopping area. Additionally, ensure your overview captures the most significant changes more explicitly to provide a stronger summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location (north/south). You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On the North side' and 'Overall', which help the reader follow the progression. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'the map', 'the centre') is consistently clear throughout the text to improve the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'transformation', 'encircling', and 'pedestrians'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'transportation facility' (which is slightly vague) and 'newly build' (which should be 'newly built'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations related to urban planning—such as 'infrastructure', 'pedestrianized zone', or 'residential development'—would elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'newly build' instead of 'newly built' and 'a transportation facility such as new bus station' (missing an article). Additionally, 'the centre of a small town from the current blueprint' is slightly awkward phrasing. Despite these errors, your meaning is consistently clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Focusing on article usage and verb forms will help improve your accuracy.
