Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map illustrates the current layout of Centre of the small town of Islip and the proposed redevelopment plan.
Overall, it is crystal clear that the town Centre is set to undergo extensive modernization. The most significant change will be the construction of a dual carriageway encircling the Centre , while the existing main road will become a pedestrian only street. In addition, new commercial, transport and residential facilities will be introduced, whereas the school and most of the existing shops will remain.
At present, the main road turns from east to west through the Centre of Islip, with rows of shops linings both sides. To the south of this road lies in a large residential area, together w9ith a school in the south-east. Beyond the shops on the northern side is open countryside.
According to the development plan, traffic will be diverted onto a newly constructed dual carriageway forming a ring around the town Centre, while the current main road will be pedestrianized. The row of shops on the southern sides of the street will remain unchanged, but those to the north will be replaced by a shopping Centre, with a car park located to east . Furthermore, new housing estate will be constructed in north-eastern part of the town, and another residential area will be added to south east, resulting in a reduction in size of the existing park. The school, however, will remain in its current location, although it will benefit for improved road access via the new ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends, such as the modernization of the town centre and the introduction of the ring road. The key features, including the pedestrianization of the main road and the addition of residential and commercial facilities, are well-selected and compared against the current layout. The information is logically grouped, and the summary is accurate. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor details are described with complete precision, such as the specific locations of the new housing estates in relation to the existing park.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is well-organized with a clear logical progression. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'According to the development plan', and 'Furthermore', which help guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and the detailed body paragraphs. The referencing is generally clear, although there are minor issues with article usage (e.g., 'to south east') that slightly disrupt the flow. Overall, the structure is coherent and supports the development of your ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a task of this nature, using terms like 'modernization', 'pedestrianized', 'encircling', and 'diverted'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'benefit for' instead of 'benefit from' and 'linings' instead of 'lining'. Additionally, there are a few typographical errors like 'w9ith'. Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning with precision and flexibility. To improve, focus on ensuring that collocations are accurate and proofread for minor spelling errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy communication. However, there are some grammatical inconsistencies, such as missing articles (e.g., 'in north-eastern part', 'to south east') and minor errors in preposition usage. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the information. To achieve a higher score, aim for greater consistency in article usage and ensure that complex structures are punctuated correctly.
