IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The maps below show the centre of a small town called Islip as it is now, and plans for its development.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The maps compare the current layout of Islip town centre with its proposed redevelopment plan.
Overall, the town centre is expected to undergo substantial changes. The existing main road will be replaced by a pedestrian-only street, while a dual carriageway will be constructed around the town centre. In addition, several new facilities, including a bus station, shopping centre, car park and extra housing, will be introduced, whereas the school and park will remain in their current locations.
At present, the town centre is divided by a main road, with shops located on both sides. The countryside is situated to the north of the road, while residential areas occupy most of the southern part of the map. A park is located in the south-east, and a school can be found in the south-west corner.
According to the proposed plan, the main road will become a pedestrian-only street, with the shops remaining on its southern side. A shopping centre, bus station and car park will be built to the north of the shops, replacing the existing countryside. Furthermore, additional housing will be constructed to the east of the car park and beside the existing residential area. Finally, a dual carriageway will surround the town centre, providing improved access while leaving the school and park unchanged.
