Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by describing the current town layout and the proposed developments. However, the overview is weak; it uses subjective language like 'it look very fantastic' rather than summarizing the key trends or significant changes. While the main features are identified, the description of the changes is sometimes confusing, such as the mention of the 'Pedestrians only road' and the relocation of the school. The report lacks a clear, objective summary of the transformation, which is essential for a higher band score in Task 1. To improve, focus on identifying the most significant shifts, such as the expansion of infrastructure and the shift in residential/commercial zones, while maintaining a neutral, analytical tone.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, the phrase 'As well as they will include' is used incorrectly to start a sentence, and the transition 'However' is used to introduce the development plan, which is acceptable but could be more sophisticated. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when describing locations (e.g., 'at between the east and south'). The progression of ideas is present but lacks the logical flow required for higher bands. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words will significantly enhance the readability of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. Phrases like 'new blueprint have a numbers of new things' and 'main rode' (spelling error for 'road') demonstrate a restricted range. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'commercial areas', 'dual carriageway', and 'pedestrians', but these are often used with incorrect collocations or grammatical errors. The tone is also overly informal ('it look very fantastic'), which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, focus on learning precise terminology for describing maps and trends, and avoid using subjective or conversational language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('The maps shows', 'Islip town have'), article usage ('at north side'), and tense consistency. The sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'new school will build at out side from new road' (passive voice error). Punctuation is also inconsistent. To reach a higher band, you need to focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that prepositions are used correctly to describe locations on a map.
